This application is to be used for to submit a request for scholarly activity funding through the DOIM Office of Educational Affairs. Eligibility is limited to current Internal Medicine residents and fellows in an accredited training program. 

 

Funding awards if granted are variable in amount with a maximum possibel award of $1000 for eligible scholarly activity (increased up to $1500 for conferences west of the Rocky Mountains or internationally). Applications MUST be submitted no later than 60 days prior to the first day of your conference in order to be considered. Exceptions may be considered, at the discretion of the OEA leadership, only if notification from the sponsor indicating acceptance to present at the conference was recived  after the 60 days cutoff AND the funding request was submitted promptly upon receipt

Please be aware that this is a competitive funding application. All application materials will be submitted to a committee who will decide, on a case by case basis, if funding will be approved.

In order to receive funding, trainees must submit an abstract for presentation to a local/regional/state/national/international meeting, and receive notification that their work has been accepted. Trainees are also required to obtain prior approval to attend the meeting from their program director. Publication cost assistance requests will be considered, at the discretion of the committee. Requests should be made in advance of publication expenditure, as funding apporoval cannot be assumed even if the cost was already incurred by the learner. Publication costs of case reports are unlikely to be awarded, though will be considered if depending upon the scientific merits of the work. Publication costs will not be awarded for any work for which funding was previosuly awarded respecting presentation at a conference. 

Approval for funding is not guaranteed and is based on the following criteria:

  • Scientific merit: this includes design methodology, overall analysis, and novelty
  • Funding is granted in priority to:
    • Original research
    • Hypothesis-driven research
    • Prospective and retrospective studies
    • Case reports/series, curricular innovations, or quality improvement
  • Other items considered in the approval process:
    • Number of times a resident/fellow has received funding previously
    • Duration of the fellowship

You will be contacted by your fellowship or residency coordinator within 10 days and notified of approval or denial.

Approval - funding requirements:

If approved, final funding is contingent upon completion of the following:

 

1. Request for academic leave approval per program policy.

2. Submission of Spend Authorization in Workday prior to travel.

3. Practice presentation for Department Chair and member of scholarship committee

4. Logging of activity in New Innovations portfolio section (scholarly activities) - please do immediately.

5. Submission of Expense Report in Workday (linked to spend authorization) within 30 days of travel. Must include original receipts and copy of approval letter.
