Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCC) : The comprehensive cancer center provides support for sponsored and investigator-initiated studies. All oncology-related clinical trials must be reviewed and approved by the Massey clinical trials office through the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC).
The PRMC conducts independent peer review of the scientific merit and progress of all clinical cancer research studies conducted within Massey. Initial review by corresponding Disease Working Groups initially assess the value, feasibility, and prioritization of studies, followed by submission to the PRMC which determines the overall scientific merit and whether a study proceeds to activation. All cancer-related research proposals must be reviewed and approved by the PRMC prior to Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval.
Research studies subject to PRMC review include the following:
Research involving patients with cancer, their families or their health care providers Research involving patients without cancer that focus on cancer screening, diagnosis or prevention Cancer-related surveys (e.g., attitudes about risk, prevention, treatment and quality of life) of the general population MCC offers several features through the Adult Outpatient Pavilion (AOP) facility.

Potential resources include:
Research Match : ResearchMatch matches you with ongoing and new research studies. Fill out your information and interests, and it will send you email updates.
Study Finder : VCU's StudyFinder is a central point for all enrolling clinical trials at VCU. Interested volunteers can search by disease, category and age to identify studies that are recruiting participants.
VCUHS Best Practice Advisory (BPA)
is a system for identifying patients who may be eligible for study participation. The BPA will identify individuals in the EPIC electronic medical record system who meet the following eligibility screening criteria. When individuals are identified, an Epic In Basket message will be autogenerated and sent in real time to select members of the study team. The message will include the name of the study and the patient's other study associations. The patient story board is visible and includes the patient name, date of birth, MRN, phone, and legal guardian/HCA. Fill out the clinical trial intake form to request this service.
TriNetX: The purpose of this tool is to allow VCU researchers to query data sources such as VCUHS EHR System (EPIC), IDX, Tumor Cancer Registry, Oncore, MCVP, MCVH, and Social Security Admin for a specific patient/potential participant population in a de-identified manner for study feasibility and to help with study design. Once cohorts have been identified, tools can be used to uncover treatment patterns, compare outcomes, and more. Using TriNetX can be essential for navigating clinical data, determining feasibility of new trials, and stimulating research interests with faculty, trainees and students. Access is free and does not require IRB-approval!
Trial Innovation Network Toolbox (TIN) Toolbox : The Trial Innovation Network invites submissions from CTSAs and reputable community health partners, offering them as a complimentary resource to the research community. The content on this platform is primarily tailored for CTSA Program staff and institutions involved in the Trial Innovation Network. However, other entities engaged in clinical trial and multi-site study recruitment, engagement, and retention activities are encouraged to utilize these resources for local implementation. These materials aim to deliver diverse information, encompassing evidence-based recruitment strategies and some that are informed by evidence. It is important to note that these materials are not intended for the general public. Adoption of certain resources may require integration into a comprehensive engagement, recruitment, and retention plan rather than standalone implementation.
TIN Social Media Outreach & Recruitment toolkit : Frequently, research teams find themselves without the necessary resources and expertise to craft compelling, culturally relevant social media content. In response, the Social Media Outreach & Recruitment Toolkit has been crafted to provide direction and resources to these teams. Serving as an extension of the RIC Recruitment & Retention Materials Content + Design Toolkit, this resource is designed to educate researchers and teams on the advantages of leveraging social media and offers guidance on utilizing it effectively for research study recruitment. Developed in close partnership with the RIC Community Advisory Board and incorporating insights from Community Engagement Studio experts, this toolkit is a valuable asset for those seeking to enhance their social media outreach efforts in research recruitment.
VCU Clinical Trials Facebook : Faculty and staff can request to advertise your IRB-approved material via our Clinical Trial Facebook page. You can also "like" to receive research tips.
Grant Writing : The Wright Center helps VCU faculty successfully fund their clinical and translational research projects from across the translational science spectrum . The center's faculty and staff have years of expertise in grant writing, editing and consultation. They offer mock study sections to assist with grant writing. To learn about upcoming mock study sections, subscribe to the Wright Center's newsletter .
Regulatory and Compliance : VCU Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) partners with faculty in all schools and departments as they seek funding, plan studies, establish collaborations, calculate budgets, submit grant applications, negotiate industry contracts, and secure patents and licensing agreements.
OVPRI provides resources such as FDA regulation , Research Integrity and Ethics , IRB assistance, (Including r eview types and requirements ) , regulatory affairs , boilerplate language , Clinical research standard operating procedures (including Transfer of participants between institutions ), data management plan assistance ,
Informatics : Our multidisciplinary Biomedical Informatics Program supports healthy communities by accelerating the translation of research data to knowledge, bridging the gap between ideas and innovative therapies. Informatics can help with
Informatic platforms
OnCore - must be logged into VCU or VCU Health VPN to access. OnCore is the enterprise-wide clinical research management system at VCU and VCU Health. The web-enabled system provides a centralized database for research teams and relies on role-based security to control study data access. The system is integrated with Cerner, VCU Health's electronic medical record, to alert clinicians of patient participation in research studies. It also records and monitors clinical trial participant consent, interventions, and safety, and reports adverse events through Cerner. OnCore collects study, participant, and procedure data to enhance clinical trial participant safety, provide accurate institutional metrics, improve research billing compliance, and increase sponsor funded cost recovery.
TriNetX : The purpose of this tool is to allow VCU researchers to query data sources such as VCUHS EHR System (EPIC), IDX, Tumor Cancer Registry, Oncore, MCVP, MCVH, and Social Security Admin for a specific patient/potential participant population in a de-identified manner for study feasibility and to help with study design. Redcap - (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a mature, secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. Using REDCap's stream-lined process for rapidly developing projects, you may create and design projects using 1) the online method from your web browser using the Online Designer; and/or 2) the offline method of constructing a 'data dictionary' template file in Microsoft Excel, which can be later uploaded into REDCap. Both surveys and databases (or a mixture of the two) can be built using these methods. REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
